Get involved
Because Connexions is a service for 13-19 year olds - it is important that young people get involved in decisions that are made about the service to make it better for young people to want to use it.

Young people get involved in different ways. There are 9 youth advisory groups in Cornwall and Devon that have members aged between 13 and 19. Each group works on different projects depending on what is needed in that area and what they have planned for the future; these can be anything like coming up with new ideas for Connexions centres, designing logos and posters and interviewing personal advisers. The groups have also designed the new Young People's Charter which outlines the rights that every young person using the service should have.

Every year all the groups get together to plan what needs to be done in the year ahead. This goes into The Young People's Plan. Most of the ideas in the Connexions business plan comes from these groups. Sometimes there are things that are discussed in the groups that they feel are important for all the groups so these issues go to a special group called the Young Person's Sub Group of the Board. This group (which also includes members from the Connexions Board of Directors) attends youth advisory group meetings to discuss any important issues that members might have. A promise is made to the young people that their suggestions won't disappear down a black hole and Connexions always makes sure that the young people know what has happened to their suggestions and if action hasn't been taken and why. Each year the Sub Group of the Board produce a leaflet that sums up what Connexions has done as a result of young people's suggestions. It also sums up what Connexions hasn't done and why.

As well as the work that the youth advisory groups do, there are other ways that young people can tell us what they think about Connexions and how they think we can improve the service. Personal Advisers involve young people in schools and in colleges and in the community by encouraging them to take part in surveys and evaluations.

The success of the Connexions Service lies in your hands! Why not get involved? Youth advisory groups exist in various towns across Cornwall and Devon and are always looking for new young people to join. Find out where your nearest youth advisory group is or use the feedback page to tell us what you think.
