Local courses

14-19 Area wide prospectuses - for information on local courses

Unsure where to find out about courses available in your area? In addition to talking to your parents/carers, Connexions personal adviser and teachers, have a look at the online prospectuses listed below. They will help you to search for a subject, or to see what courses are available at a local school, college, or training provider. The prospectuses contain information about courses from year 10 onwards.

Travel

Some schools, colleges, and training providers may provide transport for their students from certain areas - so check if there are local arrangements. If not, use the Transport Direct website or the South West Traveline website to help plan your journey.

Money to learn

If you decide to stay in full-time education, you can get financial help with the cost of your studies. This could help with transport and childcare costs. Find out more in our Money to learn section.

Applying for further education courses

  • Make sure that you have found out all the different schools and colleges in your area which offer the course(s) you are interested in so that you can decide which one is best for you.
  • Each school or college will have its own individual admissions procedure. Contact those you are interested in to find out what theirs is.
  • Also check with the school or college that the information you have is up to date and accurate.
  • You will probably need to complete an application form with personal details, which course you are applying for and why you are interested in it.
  • Practise first - take a photocopy of the form and do a few rough drafts first.
  • Complete your final version clearly in black ink.
  • Think carefully about your answers - you will have to talk about them at an interview.
  • Don't forget to check your spelling.
  • Keep a copy for yourself.
  • Make sure you return the application by the required date.
  • Some schools or colleges may have an online application procedure, but make sure you stick to the advice above.

When you go for an interview

  • Be punctual - you may need to find an unfamiliar department or office so allow enough time.
  • Take your Progress File or Record of Achievement with you if you have one.
  • Prepare questions you would like answered before you go - you can use notes to help you remember them - it shows you have prepared yourself well.
