Eating
SandwichWe all know that ‘you are what you eat’, but in the busy world we live in it’s easy to eat too much of the wrong foods because they are convenient and often seem to be cheaper.

A healthy balanced diet can be enjoyable – as well as cheap and easy – and you just have to try it to see and feel the difference.

BeansEating the right food can help you keep spots at bay, give you shiny, healthy hair and even give your mood a boost. It will help you avoid being overweight and getting heart disease and make sure you have the energy to enjoy life.

So what are the secrets of eating your way to looking and feeling great?
  • Eat breakfast - it gives your body energy to start the day. If you're a cereal lover, try to choose high-fibre or wholewheat cereals instead of the lightweight sugar-coated ones.
  • 5-a-day - aim for five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Get a variety by choosing different colours – you’ll get all sorts of vitamins and minerals which feed your skin and hair and help you to avoid colds and illnesses. Go to www.5aday.nhs.uk for top tips on eating more fruit and veg.
  • Swap white rice, pasta and bread for the brown, wholegrain variety to increase your fibre intake and fill you up.
  • Swap saturated fat for unsaturated - e.g. have olive oil instead of butter.
  • Eating fish, chicken and turkey instead of red meat will help too – try to limit red meat to just once or twice a week if possible.
  • Drink plenty of water – it's great for your looks and it's a vital part of a healthy diet. All the top celebs drink it! Aim for 1.5-2 litres per day.
  • Eat what you enjoy, but in moderation. Keep an eye on your portion size - don’t pile up your plate, and stop eating when you’re full.
  • Cakes, sweets and chips, in moderation, are OK occasionally. Same goes for crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks - fine now and again, but not everyday.
  • Be real! - we're all human, so don't try to change your diet overnight.
