Be sun smart

In the UK, over 2,000 people a year die from skin cancer, and the number is increasing.

Sunburn increases the risk of skin cancer – don’t be caught out at home or abroad:

  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 – the higher the better.
  • Sunscreens also have a quality rating of between 0 and 5 stars – the more stars, the better the quality.
  • Don’t use sunscreen as an excuse to stay in the sun for longer.
  • Re-apply sunscreen after swimming.
  • The more skin that is covered by clothing, the better – and don’t forget your hat and sunglasses.
  • Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm.
  • Keep an eye out for changes to your skin and report these to your GP without delay. Skin cancer is much easier to treat if found early.
