Drugs, alcohol and smoking

Drugs

Drugs is a term that covers a huge range of substances - anything from an aspirin to cocaine. Some drugs are legal, some not, some can be deadly, and whilst others do less damage they all carry a risk.

Whatever you feel about drugs it’s up to you to find out the facts, understand the dangers and stay up-to-date with the law. Remember, just because your mates say something is safe, it doesn’t mean they're right; find out for yourself, have an opinion and make your own decisions - it’s your life.

For information and advice on the effects and risks associated with taking drugs, or if you're worried about someone else, visit Talk to Frank or phone 0800 77 66 00.

Alcohol

Alcohol might be legal but it is illegal to buy alcohol under the age of 18. Alcohol affects everyone differently so be aware of how much you’re drinking and what it does to you. Drinking too much can make you vulnerable to personal harm and crime. It can also lead to long-term health problems such as serious liver, heart and stomach problems.

Visit Drink Aware for more information on responsible drinking.

Smoking

Smoking is also legal but you can’t buy cigarettes until you’re 18 and the dangers are very real. So if you have started smoking the best thing you can do for your health is give up now – get your friends and family to support you.

By giving up, you will:

  • feel healthier
  • be able to breathe a lot more clearly
  • have more cash in your pocket
  • reduce the risk from life threatening diseases.

For more information, and to find your nearest NHS Stop Smoking service, go to NHS Smoke Free.
