Connexions Booklets

Please note that "Which Way Now “ "It's Your Choice " and "Parents and Careers " booklets can be ordered in the summer for dispatch early in the Autumn term. It is crucial that Careers Co-ordinators order enough copies for each year group as our own publications complement the information within them.

The booklets can be ordered by phoning the distributors on 0845 602 2260. You can also download them or use them interactively online.

Which way now? is a workbook designed to help Year 9 pupils through all stages of making their option choices. It includes tasks to complete and offers the latest information on the options available to them.

Informing Choices

This guide is intended for all staff in schools in England who help learners to make choices about learning and work: in year 9 for key stage 4 and beyond, and in year 11 for post-16 opportunities. It is primarily for tutors of year 9 and 11 form groups and personal advisers from Connexions services.

It's purpose is to ensure that everyone offering information and guidance to learners in year 9 and year 11 has a single document containing accurate and up-to-date information on the full range of opportunities, qualifications and support available to learners moving into and through the 14–19 phase.

DfES: bullying around racism, religion and culture

How to prevent it, and what to do when it happens

The DfES has produced advice to schools on countering bullying around racism, religion and culture. The term “racist bullying” refers to a range of hurtful behaviour, both physical and psychological, that makes a person feel unwelcome, marginalised, excluded, powerless or worthless because of their colour, ethnicity, culture, faith, community, national origin or national status.

The advice is web-based, and can be found at http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/racistbullying >>

The key features of the website are:

• Excerpts from children talking about their own experiences
• Brief section on what the law requires/expects
• Why the DfES has decided to use the term “racist bullying” rather than “racial incident”
• Racism – what it is, and the broader issues around religion and culture
• How to prevent racist bullying and what to do when it happens – linked to school self-evaluation, with ideas for classroom activities and teaching about controversial issues, frequently asked questions, how to support and challenge, case studies
• Differences between racist and other types of bullying
• Other useful websites
• Training materials – discussion scenarios, clarifying terms and concepts
